Sri Lanka Tourism is fast moving towards the pinnacle of world tourism. This industry’s prosperity and sustainability will be determined only through creative decision making, innovative management, effective marketing and responsible leaderships. This can only be achieved through new breeds of industry professionals and decision makers who combine their industry expertise with excellent academic vigor. Developing such caliber of professionals in tourism and hotel management is a national responsibility at the moment. Understanding this national requirement, the University of Colombo, the country’s pioneer higher education leader introduces this Masters / Postgraduate Diploma programme. The programmes are especially designed to sharpen the knowledge and skills essential for decision makers, policy designers, planners, researchers and hotel managers & marketers of the tourism industry. The programme is intended to provide an ideal platform for Sri Lanka Tourism to reach global excellence.


Duration:
Duration of the programme will be of two years part time, in which the first year will be devoted to the Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism Economics and Hotel Management (DTEHM) and the second year will be allocated for the Masters in Tourism Economics and Hotel Management (MTEHM) programme. The entire program covers two academic calendars of four (4) semesters
Duration for Postgraduate Diploma (Pg. DTEHM): one (01) year
Duration for Masters Degree (MTEHM) : Pg.DTEHM + one (01) year

Admission Requirements:
(a).  The minimum academic entry qualification is a general Degree from a recognised University in Sri Lanka.

OR

(b).  A Postgraduate Diploma or a professional qualification recognised by the University of Colombo as equivalent to a Degree

OR

(c).  Three Year Management Diploma of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) with two years (02) of industry experience

OR

(d).  Four Year Management Diploma of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) with one-year Diploma Programme (non-graduate) in Travel and Tourism Economics and Hotel Management or any other related one year diploma programme and two years of industry experience

OR

(e).  Any other qualifications or experience which demonstrates that a candidate possesses appropriate knowledge and skills at Degree level may also be required.

AND

Good working knowledge of English and the applicants must satisfy the University that they are sufficiently competent in the English language.

Diploma in Travel and Tourism Economics and Hotel Management - 2011

A Pathway to University Education for Professionals in Travel and Tourism Industry

The DTTEHM is a multi-disciplinary diploma programme. It is specially designed to respond to the increasing demand for multi-skilled travel and tourism professionals who must be able to take responsibilities for a wide range of complex industry processes under the present challenges of changing global trends in the travel and tourism industry. The diploma provides practical and analytical competence in the socio-economic, ecological, marketing, managerial, accounting, information technology and legal aspects of the travel and tourism industry through interactive and application-oriented study approaches. The course targets those who are already engaged in the travel and tourism fields at different professional levels, tourism related policy makers, planners and researchers, and also those who aspire to be in a career in the travel and tourism sector. This course gives an opportunity for travel and tourism sector oriented personnel to benefit from studying at the premier national university in Sri Lanka.

Duration: One-year of study programme

Admission Requirements:
(a).  Have passed the G.C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination or its equivalent. (Preference will be given to persons who possess adequate work experience).

OR

(b).  Have passed the G.C.E. (Ordinary Level) Examination or its equivalent and have sufficient practical experience in the industry.

AND

(c).  A good working knowledge of English

Medium Of Instruction : English Language

Course Fees and Study Mode of the Diploma Programme:

Physical Classroom Teaching Mode: Rs.65, 000 (Payable in two instalments) All lectures will be held in classrooms available at the Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo.

M-Learning Teaching Mode (Online Classroom Teaching Mode):
M-learning mode is offered by mobile technologies. This provides live and recorded lectures, multiple user interactive video conferencing features, slides, virtual smart boards, material upload facilities, content management facilities, and also SMS, email and offline messaging. The system perfectly portrays a classroom setting adding a complete interactive element to the learning experience.

The selected candidates for the above programme will be qualified to register for the DTTEHM (M-learning Mode) programme by adhering to one of the payment options given below.

1. Course fee with internet connection plus a dongle: Rs. 110,000 single payment or Rs. 55,000 payable in two instalments (Students will be eligible to register by payment of the first instalment).
2. Course fee with internet connection: Course fee with connection only and no dongle Rs. 86,500.
3. Course fee only (Online classroom based teaching mode) Rs. 84,600

Application Submitting Procedure:
Download the application from www.cmb.ac.lk/academic/arts/econ/index.php or collect from the library of the Department of Economics, University of Colombo. Application fee Rs. 1500/= payable at the interview.

In addition to the above fees of each programme, the registration, library and examination fees are to be paid at the time of registration. Students will also be required to provide a refundable library deposit.
